skipping town

I'm packing my bags to leave for Spain tomorrow night. We'll get there early Monday morning, and will travese the southern Spanish countryside. Around Wednesday my brother and I will leave our parents in Spain and take a train and ferry down to Morocco. Among the things we hope to procure in Morocco are fine coffee, sunburns, and the weariness that results from anticipation/fulfillment and excessive travelling. Among the things we do not hope to procure are diseases, complimentary bullets from bandits, and vermin. I'll post some pics when I'm back.

you've been traveling all this time and you're still makig myopic/racist comments about diseases and bandits? Way to evolve.

I second Jordan's thoughts. I'm currently researching Spanish decorations for a book cover I'm working on. Jon, I envy you in a very kind way. Ubertraveler.

Where are the pictures? It's sad when I have to ask your friends how you're doing. Even Chris doesn't keep in touch with you. When are you going to cease your world travels and return to the great city of Greenville? Tucker, LG, and Polly miss you immensely. Hope you're having fun! Your favorite sister-in-law.

Sarah,
I'll be in Greenville mid-May. I'm going to Norway this week! I will post some pics of that, as well as of Spain/Morocco. If I ever get to it...

Norway?!?! Now I'm really jealous. I'm pinin' for the fjords.

I was in Morocco in December and very unfortunately never made it out of Casablanca. The rest of the country looked lovely from the plane. Casablanca struck me as just another city--dirty, overpriced, and largely organized around tourists. But maybe I was with the wrong travel companions. People told me Fez is lovely by comparison.

I just ran across this post again, and as before, am absolutely baffled at how anyone could construe this as racist. According to the CIA World Factbook, Morocco is a key player in the European drug trade. The degree of risk for communicable diseases is described as "intermediate," with the possibility of "significant risk in some locations" for vectorborne diseases. When I visited a terrorist alert had been issued, which meant that all U.S. servicemembers were temporarily forbidden to visit the country. Is it racist to acknowledge that one is more likely to encounter crime or pestilence in Morrocco than in Spain? No, it really is not. Did I imply in any way that Moroccans are intrinsically more criminal or disease-ridden? Again, nope. All I said was that I hoped to avoid disease, bullets, and vermin--all of which are much more common in certain countries than in other countries.

So, while holier-than-thou politial rants may be particularly cathartic, please reserve them for times when they are actually appropriate, Jackie.
