hands clamped firmly over ears

In school and out I feel like a sheep, continually grazing, never looking up to see something other than the next clump of grass. Full schedule and procrastinating disposition combine to create a frantically busy me. I'm in a world charged with the grandeur of God and all I can meditate on is my credit card bills. The heavens are singing out His glory--shouting it in my ear, actually--but they don't drown out the din of the workplace. Occasionally it threatens to jar me from my complacity. Occasionally. But usually my deep-seated conviction of self-importance emerges unscathed. In the midst of all this synaesthetic ruckus I show off my dazzling virtuosity at all things trivial. The heavens declare what they will; it's possible I may listen.

This is a great quote regarding this topic:

God is our true Friend, who always gives us the counsel and comfort we need. Our danger lies in resisting Him; so it is essential that we acquire the habit of hearkening to His voice, or keeping silence within, and listening so as to lose nothing of what He says to us. We know well enough how to keep outward silence, and to hush our spoken words, but we know little of interior silence. It consists in hushing our idle, restless, wandering imagination, in quieting the promptings of our worldly minds, and in suppressing the crowd of unprofitable thoughts which excite and disturb the soul.

I was glad for Dr. Berg's sermon in chapel today for this reason. When if feels like everything on this earth is swamping you, distracting you from the things of God, you can remember that God knows that you are dust, and that He gives grace to those humble enough to ask for it. I have to yell this at myself an awful lot.

Well said, Jon. I'm the same way. I hate it.

Maybe the real problem is with the hands. If they were serving God and others, then they would not be over my ears.
