Abroadness

After a bag of Peiffer's stale-flavored breadsticks, I touched down in the motherland last Friday afternoon. It looks like Greenville except for the sheep and gnarled trees.

Travel from Gatwick to L'abri was nigh infuriating, however I did manage to squeeze into a train station toilet the width of a phone booth with all my luggage and guitar, thus making the remaining 15 train stops manageable.

The manor is extensive in it's beauty and subtle lack of privacy. Every voice spoken in basement and attic is audible in the kitchen.

I share housing with the Dutch, the Korean, the American, the Hungarian, the Australian, and of course the Britainian. And we will learn together.

Awesome! I can't wait to hear what you'll have to share about what you will learn. Glad you made it there safely!

do it, do it, do it man.
and kitty says yo. or "eerrh"

but I got to tell on her; she stole my car and keys and wallet and drove to the White Horse Road Wal-Mart and bought the new Scott Stapp CD + "the Best of Creed"

and she plays it at all hours. F.

Posted by: Brade at January 24, 2006 03:10 PM

I just found out (via the Brade vine) of your endeavors. I turn a slight yellow with envy. I hope you get a lot of chances to share what's going down on the other side of the pond.

I owe you 15 bucks for a mug from two years ago. don't worry. you will be paid.

to keep you up to date with kitty:

we had the misadventure of watching jurassic park III last night. she got scared.

Posted by: xory at January 25, 2006 12:43 AM

Congrats on your arrival. Enjoy. Keep in touch.

Kammer,

Glad you ladded and are still in one piece. For some reason, you're line about the kitchen and the manor gave me a distinct feeling of St. Anne's from Lewis' 3rd Space Trilogy book.

Keep an eye out for friendly bears and large men in cloaks that otherwise look like Travlers.

Is the Netherlander a Korver, by chance? If so, extend a stiff-armed handshake on my behalf.

Posted by: Next of Kin at January 25, 2006 05:14 PM

i'm wondering what the heck you're doing at this very moment. chances are, it's really boring. but of course, no one wants to believe that: "i mean, he's in freaking England! for crying out loud! it CAN'T be BORING!"

come on people.

kidding. kidding. ben, you are missed. i genuinely can't wait to hear what's happened thus far. love, koelle

Posted by: koelle at January 26, 2006 03:46 PM

kitty and i also watched Collateral.

she was scared of jamie foxx's driving, all the spanish, and tom cruise's white hair.

Kammer!!! Han Solo told me to tell you 'hi' and uh may the force be with you.

Posted by: justin at February 3, 2006 04:53 PM

Kammer. Greenville is becoming really boring without you.
at first cory and kitty and i made a card boardcutout of you. we told jokes to it and kitty made obscene gestures at it. but its not the same. we drove around town with the cardboard you and listened to music, but it wasnt the same. we even go to the mexican resturants and kitty does obscene things there too, but it still isnt the same.

Posted by: justin at February 10, 2006 11:16 AM

then the cardboard cut out went missing. justin and I couldn't find it for days then we found it in kitty's closet next to her box with the words "doof tew" scrawled in child-like characters across the cardboard cutout's chest.

upon further analyzation we concluded that "doof tew" is actaully "wet food" spelled backwards.

I gave kitty her wet food but she does not sing for me. she only wakes me up at 4 A.M.

I am weeping a Brannon-styled chuckle. Too much.

Posted by: Brannon at February 12, 2006 02:07 PM

I've been slain by a knight.

Come pick me up.

Tell Kitty I love her.

Posted by: Kammer at February 13, 2006 03:27 PM

Posted by: Cory at February 14, 2006 02:46 PM

Posted by: tim p at February 15, 2006 01:07 PM

Cory and I have both taken oaths to avenge your death my friend. And Kitty has wept bitter tears

Posted by: justin at February 16, 2006 01:54 PM

you better pull through or i'll be forced to give your ticket to kitty...

Ben, I found a new word. I now use it thrice daily.

Wunderkammer: A chamber or cabinet of wonders; spec. a place exhibiting the collection of a connoisseur of curiosities, such as became common from the late Renaissance onwards.

Posted by: jon at February 22, 2006 10:50 PM

K,
Please come back to greenville. We may not have crumpets or table manners, but we do have pixie sticks and kindness.
We also have rednecks and unsavory looking cats.

Everyone misses you.

An anonymous source informed me of your extended stay in London. The smog really is addicting, isn't it?

Posted by: George Sand at March 31, 2006 11:17 AM

So I'm a friend of Joy's, and I live in Edinburgh. She sent me here.

Ahhh seems like it was just yesterday that I was sitting in that tiny room on that computer in the corner of the tape room, updating my blog from L'Abri last summer...

1) Enjoy it, but also don't expect more than you may get. I think maybe I was expecting too much, and so didn't appreciate how great it was. But then I was also there at the end of term, and for less than a week, and I wouldn't recommend either.

2) Be sure and venture into town to the pub. There's a great one with a nice outdoor patio I highly recommend.

3) Shame it's probably too cold right now for volleyball, eh? Those were some of our best times.

4) Pray hard and listen well.

Those are my thoughts on L'Abri. And while you're here you really should visit Scotland. All sorts of great Reformation sites. Plus, I know all the good pubs.

Sincerely,
A Woman You Do Not Know

I've just realised you've been there for like, months now. I got the impression from Joy you'd just gotten there. Nevermind what I said, you probably know all that by now.

Hope you're loving it. :)
