I've recently became interested in Paul Hindemith.
One of his viola/string orchestra pieces, Funeral Music (Trauermusik) was written and premiered the same day, in England, when the composer heard of the death of George V.
It's slightly dissonant in areas, but it has a sweep that touches on a lot of emotions. It reminds me of walking in a windy, open area.
