Windy day. A ton of us went to a Jasper Johns exhibit in downtown Greenville.
The museum, last time I had been was about a year ago, the winy red Bartlett exhibit.
I stood in the shadow of all the Catenaries, admiring Johns' ability to find vitality in everyday objects, the junk sitting around his house or in his memory. A mans' shadow, a mug, the focal points of a Romanticist piece. He had this obsessive series of repeated compositions and elements, some were perfect some were ugly. Persistent chap.
The Seasons were accompanied by 4 poems written quickly by a 12-year old Daniel Shapiro who had seen the compositions. I couldn't find them online, but Google did something frightening. After it had chewed up 17 of my quoted attempts to find the poem, it spat up this single entry, NOTE there is no mention of Jasper the JOHNS in the search box, this is a totally different type of Jasper....shudder.
We met Dave Hooker. Dave is a salt-firing potter from Woodruff and he was kind enough to lead us into the bowels of the museum, where they, surprise, house a fully equipped ceramics studio. We talked shop a bit, listened more. Found out about some events. Which brings me to another issue.
I'm about to throw myself into a commitment, which is astounding. I'm joining UVA (Upstate Visual Arts). Claiming to be a potter, though not a teaching potter, I've volunteered, or checked the little boxes to help out with workshops, Art in the Park, random exhibitions, if I'm called upon. This could involve hanging drapery for someone's booth or rearranging Guy Stevens toothpaste artwork. Either way, it's putting myself in harms way so to speak, I may have to actually engage people to be inspired about something, and that's scary to me. Because I don't want something I enjoy to turn to cancer for someone else because I can't relate properly. We shall see. And the Lord can twist my mouth to say stuff I never dreamed of. And He can do it for you and you and you....
Now the work calls and the local Denny's night is on, so
no way! i've been planning to join UVA for a few weeks...just talked to Will G. about it. the only problem is that i don't have a car to get down there and such.
i've a hankering for a mango peach smoothie from mediterrania.
