So here is a list of my 100 favorite songs. "Why?" you may ask. "Who cares?" Um...good question. Why does anyone say anything? Maybe we blog because of boredom. Maybe we blog because it gratifies the fundamental human need for self-revelation. Who knows. If you read it I'll assume you are very interested to know what my 100 favorite songs are and will scurry off immediately to your computer to purchase these on iTunes.
Songs appear on here for a variety of reasons. Some for their harrowingly beautiful vocals, some for their lyrical genius, some for their mind-numbing displays of guitar wizardry, some for no reason other than that I have taken an inexplicable liking to them. My taste is disproportionately weighted to the last decade and to the 1970s. For me those 2 decades in between are for the most part unnoticed and unappreciated, as are all the decades previous to the 60s. A total of 5 by Bob Dylan appear on the list (including 3 covered by other artists), and one by his progeny as well. Ben Folds appears 5 times on the list. Muse, Half Past Forever, and Sigur Ros all hold the distinction of appearing 4 times on the list. Those bands are special, and you should buy all of their stuff.
This list will change, probably daily. And I didn't evaluate the order very carefully. So if you wonder why one lame song is much higher on the list than some masterpiece of musical genius, there's probably no reason. And like Will, I've considered only popular songs for this list. And like Chris said, some of these songs are not necessarily my favorites now; they're just old favs that have a special place in my heart. Anyway, without further ado, here it is:

Posted by: andrea at September 8, 2007 07:21 PMFantastic list my friend. although, I might venture to add Fight for Your Right To Party by the Beastie Boys. As well as Fight for Your Right to Not Take Yourself So Seriously by Rockforth
Posted by: Doug Scudder at September 9, 2007 11:54 PM"Everybody Hurts"? How does it stand out?
Posted by: jsligh at September 13, 2007 11:17 AMI can't believe you like the Iron and Wine version better than the sweet Postal Service version...
Number one on my list for the last month has been The Killers "Read My Mind" -- great video too, I even bought it on iTunes for $2.
Posted by: SAM! at September 14, 2007 02:46 PMthe postal service version is pretty cool. but there's a certain pastoral beauty to the iron & wine version that can't be beaten by video-game bips and beeps.
the killers are mind-blowingly awesome. i like listening to "all these things I have done" in a car full of people so we can sing along in multi-part harmony, loudly and shamelessly. i haven't yet heard "read my mind" but will check it out asap.
Posted by: jsligh at September 14, 2007 03:01 PMNo, you won't.
"I will check it out" is sidespeak for "I won't check it out but here's a doggie treat for your comment."
And yes, in fell swoop, I have judged you and have maligned your character.
how doesn't "everybody hurts" stand out? what aesthetic pleasure can one receive from that song?
sorry, sam, but i agree with jon's preference of the iron & wine version.

Posted by: andrea at September 23, 2007 12:56 PMThe fact that your top 100 songs doesn't include anything from Tears for Fears or that you have multiple Ben Folds song yet none of them are "Fired", "Annie Waits", or "Selfless, Cold and Composed" makes me question your opinion on "good" songs. And would it hurt you to add something from the Majasty Music label???
Posted by: Dean at October 12, 2007 01:21 PMSo I saw you on the TV guide channel...how'd that all end up going for you. Will it be a good Thanksgiving? I sure hope so cause you are amazing. xo
