I don't know if I do. I'll admit, I like the works of George MacDonald, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and frequently delve into philosophy, but somehow preaching from those sources rather than the word of God seems somewhat empty. Sure, I've learned a few things from a rapid race through George MacDonald's At the Back of the North Wind, and I've picked up a few arguments against the postmodern movement by working through some of the holes in their philosophy, but one must remember that in both cases, I drew from another primary source, that which inspired George MacDonald to write what he did, and that which postmodernists have rejected. That primary source was the Bible. It is because of the Word of God that I understand what George MacDonald was saying, or C.S. Lewis, or Tolkien, or why Foucault is wrong. The thing then that affected my heart was not these works, but rather another work, greater than any of them, the foundation for my Christian heart and reasoning, the Holy Spirit, the living Word of God in my heart. It is not enough to challenge one's world view, but rather one must tell the truth, that's all Christ did, and that's all I should do. Other than this, I have one more thing to say, you may call me a bit of a doom-sayer, but let's look at the facts, the end is near... "The day is far spent... let us then be up and doing."

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
2Ti 4:4 And they shall turn away their ears from, the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Thanks for you thoughts, Anonymous. Your criticism is a valid one, but I don't think it's valid toward Tim Keller. I don't think you'll ever find that Keller preaches from these sources instead of the Word of God. Keller is a solid expositor of the Bible. He's something of a megachurch wunderkind because he doesn't have all the trappings of the seeker-sensitive churches: he preaches from the text, the service is "traditional," and the church does not mass-market itself.

What Keller is doing with these non-primary sources seems to be one of two things:
*utilizing the men God has given to the Church; God has gifted the Church with many wise men/women whom we should heed; Keller is just using the ones who aren't around anymore
*engaging the culture; look at what Paul did in Acts 17. He displayed a knowledge of their own culture and philosophy and challenged.

Call me an optimist, but I think Keller's doing just fine.

As I said above... I don't know; I have a few mixed feelings/thoughts about it. Anyway, nice to see a bit of your perspective. (I guess I probably set myself up for some extreme view of my thoughts with "the end is near" toward the end of the comment.)
