Oh how I love irony. I dont' think it's my conservative bias that makes me think Al Franken is a pompous Pharisee. Franken's book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right, made waves last year when he delivered his sarcastic invective on just about every conservative out there. The book dedicated a whole chapter to Bob Jones University. Many readers were left scratching their heads though, not at Franken's mockery of Bob Jones, but at his pious sermonizing at the end of the chapter.
Franken visited Bob Jones under the false pretext of bringing his son as a prospective student. Ironically enough, his own son refused to participate in the scheme, thinking it to be entirely in bad taste.
Perhaps Franken's deceit is forgivable. He's not the first to shade the truth to get a good story. Franken ventures into dangerous territory at the end of his chapter, though, when he assumes the moral high ground and feeds us the moral of the story. With a pious fervor he reigns down his rhetorical brimstone on conservative lies and the lying liars who tell them. Am I the only one who notices the irony here? You can't lie and then criticize those who lie. It just doesn't work that way.
Anyway, it looks like Al Franken is in trouble now. Did you know that out of the 112 reporters he has hired over the years, only one was black? Peter Schweizer's new book, Do As I Say (Not As I Do) : Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy, notes the irony of the situation, since Franken strongly implied throughout his book that Republicans are racist. It is telling that Franken is not protesting the figure Schweizer quoted. He is quietly seeking a lawsuit regarding the "private information" that Schweizer acquired.

It was also an eye-opener as to how someone totally unrelated to the University can view it (even after visiting)--maybe that's just prior bias.
