can it

Somehow the university setting is particularly conducive to lunch-table arguments. I’m used to it. One form of argument, however, up with which I shall not put, is any argument that claims to be the “balanced” argument. “Balance” is shorthand for “whatever position I happen to hold” or “wherever on the conservative/liberal spectrum I happen to be.” We talk as if truth sits in the middle of a see-saw, waiting for the facts to come to one end or the other of the see-saw and throw truth off balance. Argue as you will. Just don’t call yourself balanced.

I find that if people have to say they are balanced then they usually aren't. In my humble opinion of course.

That's why I sit alone at lunch/dinner/all the time. To avoid all the "balanced" conversation. Otherwise I might start chuckin' my tray at folks.

I say that you go into the dinning commen to eat not talk. You can avoid the balanced conversations that way :)

The nerd in me had to ask about this--

"Up with which I shall not put"

What are your thoughts on ending with a preposition? Do you avoid it like the plague? Is it ok in certain circumstances?

Well, I personally go to the dining common to eat. I don't frequent the place much because my diet is restricted. But, I'm not your average BJU student.

Most go there to either get the hook-up, or show off who they are getting the hook-up with, or to see who has the hook-up with someone else. And the others go there to talk.

Michael,
Supposedly Winston Churchill used that phrase in response to an editor who chided him for ending sentences with prepositions. In most settings, it's perfectly acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition, as far as I know. But when I write papers for my English classes, I'll still check to see if there's some other way to write the sentence.

Good observation. One of the reasons I like your blog, Jon, is because it is so balanced.
