2 mammals and a rising sun, 8:37 a.m.

All’s quiet in the living room, except for the raucous purring of the half-grown cat on my lap. I wade through the sea of thoughts until the gradually increasing volume of the purrs commandeers my mind. The black cloud over my head, (just like the ones in the cartoons, in case you’re wondering) immediately dispels.

I look around me. The early sun sprays light all around the room, with me, and the cat, caught in the middle of the splattering sunbeams. I look down at the creature: like cold butter in a hot skillet, she steadily melts, sprawling out all over my lap. And for the time, I play the glutton, and stuff myself overflowing with the simple pleasures of the moment. Soon I’ll move on to practical and dull things; but for now, I’ll gleefully ignore the duties of life, and gorge on the sensory smorgasbord around me.

Hypothetical Situation: You're driving down a backroad at night, fiddling with your radio knobs. When you look up you see two small mammals in the road. On the left side of the yellow stripe is a small brown kitten. On the right is a snow white bunny. You know you must run over one. Which would you choose? Explain.

oh, the painful decision. well, i don't really care for bunnies, to be honest. they don't do any cool tricks, they don't purr, they're not even house-trained. but i don't really care for cats that don't live in my house, despite any evidence you may have to the contrary (consisting of a photograph of me attempting to swallow a philipino cat). so i don't know which i would run over.

i think the real problem here, sam, is that you're accusing me of unbridled maudlin mawkishness. i stand defiant against any such accusations.

the entry is not meant to be a sappy celebration of the restorative power of cats. it’s meant to assert our own frailty and dependence upon the environment. mood swings are often affected by something so simple, and so irrelevant to life, something like a sunrise or a pet. i don’t think that any of us are as stable and rational as we would like to think. a sunrise or a purring cat can radically alter your response to what life hands you.

"I look down at the creature: like cold butter in a hot skillet, she steadily melts, sprawling out all over my lap. And for the time, I play the glutton, and stuff myself...."

wait a second.
you ate your cat?!

Well now just hold your horses. I guess my figurative language in those two sentences overlapped. I did not eat my cat. Had I skipped the butter simile, we would not have this confusion.

One might note that I do not say that I stuffed myself with the butter-like cat. Rather, I stuffed myself with the pleasures of the moment, which consisted of the gradual sunrise and the loud cat noises emanating from the cat. One cannot eat sunrises and cat noises, as far as I know.

Because Jon wouldn't answer you, Sam, I will. I would hit the cat. Without even thinking about it.

I would try to swerve and hit them both.
