Pickin' on the Six String

Guess what.

really, guess...

I'm taking guitar lessons.

A guy that lives a couple doors down the way has and plays a guitar. He's been excellent in teaching me the right technique and motivating me to practice and work hard with learning the chords and notes.

This is the first time I've ever tried to learn an instrument. It amazes me how simple the chords can be and how mathematically ordered the notes are on the strings. The more I practice the easier it becomes to recognize notes on a page and play them, almost as easy as sight reading to sing. I'm hoping that I'll be good enought to play hymns out of a hymnal or pick out a tune after hearing a really cool song.

So, if you ever want a mottled rendition of 'Shenandoa' or 'Be Thou My Vision' please give me a call.

way to attempt the innocent "i'm just learning and instrument" ploy....

is it just me or do i distinctly remember hearing "chicks totally dig guys who play guitars" come out of your mouth...

you can get me back later for posting that all over your blog...
=D

meanwhile, you've inspired me to go pull my poor broken-necked guitar out of its case and pluck a few songs..

Do chicks really dig guys who play guitar? That's one of those things that guys would really like to know.

Posted by: froc at October 17, 2004 09:09 PM

tim, you will break your vow if you keep it up...those poor girls.

no pru, it's not a rule. now if the guy is just totally the coolest most wonderful person ever AND he can play the guitar, it's not a bad thing. =D

now a guy who can play the piano on the other hand....

Posted by: gwen at October 18, 2004 10:12 AM

why chicks dig guys is unpredictable. you could chalk it up to instrument-playing. a chick might dig a guy who's savvy with the music. but a chick might just dig a guy, period. can it really be attributed to a guitar or piano? in a sense, it's like the tootsie roll pop licking question -- the world may never know.

Posted by: joy at October 18, 2004 11:17 AM

tootsie roll pop licking?

not familiar with that one.

Posted by: gwen at October 18, 2004 01:04 PM

nothing. just dating myself again.
How Many Licks?

Posted by: joy at October 18, 2004 03:34 PM

The answer, joy, is 42.

So musical talent (or musical interest) does make a guy more attractive if he already has a good start on being attractive--is that the general vibe I'm getting here?

Posted by: froc at October 18, 2004 04:12 PM

Tim...."chicks" don't always dig guys who play the guitar (or any other instrument for that matter). My guys didn't/doesn't....but he had a hot car and wore a cool uniform when we met. Now there's no more uniform and I have the cool car.....he has a TRUCK!

Posted by: eMom at October 18, 2004 04:17 PM

of course. 42 it is, furp. or was...way back in 1970. if tootsie roll pops have come as long a way as apples and macintoshes, then we could be dealing with an entirely new-and-improved set of figures.

besides, now you're dating us both. (be careful about that, ok?)

furthermore: the "42" findings have been published only selectively for favored audiences. i believe you must be wearing a white toga and sporting a long frivolous beard.

(or maybe it was it sporting a short frivolous toga and wearing a long black beard? or in this case, maybe substitute a guitar in for the beard or the toga -- preferrably the beard so that you're still clothed with something when all's said and done.)

i'll leave the vibe portion of your question to other commenters. vibes are not my thing.

Posted by: joy at October 18, 2004 04:39 PM

i'm all about vibes.

Posted by: gwen at October 18, 2004 06:38 PM

something smells of ethan....

Posted by: gwen at October 18, 2004 10:01 PM

So, adjusting for inflation, "42" has now become "57." This will force a readjustment of our entire numbering system, which is long overdue, I might add. I'm getting rather tired of seventeen following sixteen; we need a change.

Posted by: froc at October 19, 2004 02:22 PM

agreed!

now --
who wants to volunteer to do lisle's voiceover?
"i am sixteen, going on eighteen...."

Posted by: joy at October 19, 2004 05:51 PM

I'd volunteer, but my falsetto isn't what it used to be . . . .

Posted by: froc at October 20, 2004 02:51 PM

actually, 42 adjusted by the inflation since 1970 would be 220.6406 licks. not going anywhere for a while???

oh, and Zaphod stole my toga, so i have been forced to retreat to an Aztec-print bed sheet.

OK, yes, vibes are good.

so I can basically assume that if I save up for a good car, get a makeover, and tell people that I have a guitar in the trunk, then I'll be golden, right?

Does anyone know where to get some killer vibes?

Posted by: timf at October 21, 2004 04:24 PM

ps.

Joy, I'll join the dated ranks. Long live school-house rock.

Do owls with mortar boards really have tongues?

Letter to the Editor

Timf,

Please could you remove froc's "at least you still have your towel" comment? Seeing as how it's the seventeenth one, and we're no longer honoring seventeen in its original sequence.

With thanks,
joy
