update #1

If you are HTML savvy please leave a helpful comment.

How would I get the white space on the sides of my 700 pixel wide main page to turn a particular shade of green?

Also, I would like about fifty pixels of the same green shade to separate the masthead from the bottom edge of the browser's tool bar.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

nope. your html is turned off. go into weblog configuration and turn it on. there's a tiny little checkbox that must needs be checked.

sorry, timf. i saw 'leave a helpful comment' and didn't see the postscript of your entry. your blog looks very fine. centering - you done good. i don't think you did the same thing as spanning it, but centering the whole thing works. i haven't met anyone yet who knew the mystery of spanning.

as far as the "borders" that really aren't borders. have you messed with the colors of your blog container in the css/stylesheet template? you can go to movablestyles.org and download one of theirs that has the filled containers and bottom borders and then just note the code and manipulate it for your own desired look/feel.

maybe that's too vague. sorry. if i had time i'd go in and work on it so i could give you the exact names/%, etc.

if you do a search for "web safe colors" on ben young's hatshop blog, you'll find a link to a pretty nice non-dithering colors palette with codes. but i'm sure you already have stuff like that at your fingertips and don't need me to point you to it.

good [luck].

one more thing...and i'll stop filling your commentia quota.

the comment text is really light grey on my safari browser. i haven't checked it in IE or firefox, but it's barely readable on here with normal brightness/contrast monitor settings.

in your css file add the following:

body {
background-color: #green-hex-code;
padding-top: 50px;
}

Note the #green-hex-code above should be the 6 digit hex number for the color shade. For example, white would be #ffffff.
